a strange thing happened when I was on the tube
Sounds like the novel of a crap book, but it is true.
On saturday I was returning from a cricket game and dragging my fucken humongous cricket bag up the stairs, when suddenly it felt really light.
I turned around, and some guy had picked it up.
I looked at him quizzically, and he said “I had a free hand”.
It was that simple.
We exchanged nothing else.
He had a smile on his face.
It made me uncomfortable, but I checked my bag he stole nothing.
And he had this massive back pack on, so why he suddenly felt so keen to help I have no idea.
I wasn’t struggling with the bag, just dragging it.
But here this man was, the random picking up the bag and helping man.
While that was weird, the really weird bit was the fact he smiled, on the tube, I had assumed there was a law against it.
He smiled and helped me.
Odd.

I’m an almost native Londoner who has also done this on occasion, though normally for old ladies. It’s a nice little hobby – no real hassle for me, but I get to feel like a slightly quirky yet helpful person for about ten minutes (maybe like someone out of a Miranda July film). You have to be a bit careful though – I helped an old man once and he was really funny about a woman actively reducing his testosterone by getting involved with his luggage. Anyway, perhaps you looked like an old lady, and when you turned round and he saw you were actually a strapping young man, he smiled.
