I think 2 kittens would be the most fun. I don’t understand your problem with being a 2 cat household. 2 kittens can play with each other instead of bothering you.

Farm dogs live outside. At a push I suppose you could run a scrapyard and keep Rottweilers or Dobermans as guard dogs, although I’m not sure whether either of those breeds have neat faces. Rottweilers are a bit slobbery and Dobermans a bit pointy for neatness.
